Real Salt Lake, Queretaro and Santos Laguna open CCL campaigns with wins
Joao Plata helped Real Salt Lake to a 1-0 win in their opening CONCACAF Champions League Group G against Municipal in Guatemala City on Tuesday night.
The Ecuador international scored the only goal of the game within two minutes of the first whistle, reacting first to Javier Morales free kick as it bounced in the Municipal box.
The hosts tried valiantly to get back into the match, but RSL had keeper Nick Rimando to thank after he made two excellent saves to deny Carlos Ruiz and help the MLS team nab a vital three points away from home.
In Mexico, Queretaro marked their CCL debut with a 2-0 win over Panamanian side San Francisco F.C.
Second-half goals from Emanuel Alejandro Villa and Victor Milke ensured Los Gallos Blancos moved to the top of Group C.
Santos Laguna also began their CCL campaign with a win, defeating Trinidad and Tobago's W Connection F.C. 4-0 at the Estadio Corona.
Cape Verde striker Djaniny bagged a brace for the Mexican side, while Jesus Alonso Escoboza and Luis Mendoza also got on the scoresheet.
