Olimpia oust Portland from the CONCACAF Champions League

The Portland Timbers have failed to qualify from the CONCACAF Champions League group stage after being downed 3-1 by Olimpia at the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino.

The Hondurans win meant that both teams finished level on nine points and head-to-head goal difference from four games in Group Five, with only Olimpia's better record of away goals in their head-to-head games with Portland sending them through.

The Timbers always looked in for a tough night, having to chase the game after conceding two goals -- one from Romell Quioto and then a second by Anthony Lozano -- in the opening four minutes.

Meanwhile, a second-string DC United side walked away 1-0 victors in their final CCL group clash with Panamanian side Tauro FC.

The calculated gamble of playing the reserve team paid off, with United weathering a second-half barrage and stealing a 1-0 victory thanks to Conor Shanosky's fortuitous strike.

The win has earned the MLS side a top-four seed in the tournament's knockout round.

Elsewhere, a Oribe Peralta brace earned Club America a 2-0 win over Comunicaciones, while defending champions Cruz Azul were held to a 1-1 by hosts Alajuelense.
