Wondo powers Earthquakes past Impact

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Chris Wondolowski, Marvin Chavez and Shea Salinas scored to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact in group play in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night.

San Jose remained alive in Group 5 with the resounding victory, but the Earthquakes need help from the Impact to advance. Group leaders Heredia can clinch the top spot and the only berth in the knockout round with a tie or win in Montreal next Tuesday. That would make the Guatemalans' trip to San Jose on Oct. 23 meaningless.

The Impact also are still alive, but just barely. They need a convincing win over Heredia next week in their last group match, and then a narrow win by San Jose against Heredia.

Wondolowski rolled home the opening goal in the 21st minute, cashing in when Steven Lenhart flicked a header on from Dan Gargan's long throw in.

Chavez and Salinas scored in the second half following failed clearances by Montreal's defense.

Chavez trapped a ball from Patrice Bernier in the 57th minute and quickly sent a left-footed shot from 22 yards past goalkeeper Evan Bush.

Salinas sealed the victory in the 84th minute when he slid a shot under Bush to the far post.

Salinas almost made it 4-0 in second-half injury time with an open look inside Montreal's area, but Bush came off his line to make the save.
