CONCACAF Champions League unveils new format without group stage

CONCACAF has revealed their new format for the CCL, and the FC crew debate if this benefits or harms MLS clubs' chances.

CONCACAF has announced a revised format for the CONCACAF Champions League that eliminates the group stage starting in the 2017-18 edition of the tournament.

The tournament will now involve 31 clubs and be comprised of two stages. The first stage will see 16 teams from the Caribbean and Central America compete in a tournament that runs from August to October.

Liga MX open to potential new cup competition with MLS - president

Liga MX and MLS teams already compete against each other in the CONCACAF Champions League.

After withdrawing from the Copa Libertadores, Liga MX is open to a potential new cup competition in collaboration with Major League Soccer, the Mexican league's president said on Friday.

"It's a possibility," Enrique Bonilla said about working together with MLS. "Mexico has wanted to do this for some years now, to have some type of tournament with the U.S. teams, but for now we will just have the CONCACAF Champions League."

Liga MX officially opts out of 2017 Copa Libertadores

The Mexico Football Federation (FMF) announced on Friday that Liga MX clubs will not participate in Copa Libertadores 2017.

Liga MX sides have participated in the South American tournament for the past 19 editions by invitation, but planned new nearly all-year formats expanding the Copa Libertadores from 27 to 42 weeks mean Mexico can no longer take part, officials told ESPN.

CONMEBOL and FMF tried to reach a late scheduling solution, but could not agree on shifts to either calendar.

FC Dallas thrashed Suchitepequez 5-2 in its final CONCACAF Champions League group stage match to advance to the knockout rounds of the region's top continental club championship.

Needing a win, the hosts started perfectly as a Tesho Akindele own goal had Suchitepequez leading 1-0 after five minutes. Wilson Morales scored at the 22-minute mark to double the lead.
