As for Ireland, that defensive solidity they displayed in abundance during qualifying deserted them as they conceded three soft goals. Nothing really clicked at either end of the pitch and they have much work to do before they face the world champions on Thursday.

Croatia weren't really tested at the back but looked lively up front; Mandzukic and Jelavic appears a good combo. And Modric was immaculate as ever. A great start for them.
