Columbus Crew SC studying potential demand for a new stadium

The Columbus Crew SC are studying the possibility of building a new stadium, the MLS franchise confirmed on Monday.

The team's current home, MAPFRE Stadium, became the United States' first soccer-specific stadium when it opened in 1999.

However, the club have hired a consulting firm to help determine the potential demand for a new home, with a downtown location thought to be the desired destination.

"Precourt Sports Ventures hired a national expert to look at the feasibility of a new stadium in Columbus," a club spokesperson said on Monday.

The franchise sent a number of its fans emails inviting them to fill out a survey that would help the club determine supporters' "opinion and potential interest in the project."

The Spokesman added: "The analysis is part of due diligence related to strategic planning for what a stadium could look like and what the demand would be."
