Colorado Rapids sign former Hull and Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa

The Colorado Rapids signed Honduras international defender Maynor Figueroa on Friday, one of many changes made to their back line before the MLS transfer deadline.

Figueroa, 32, made 45 appearances for Hull City in the Premier League the past two seasons before the Tigers were relegated in May.

The Rapids used targeted allocation money to sign Figueroa, after trading general allocation money to Sporting Kansas City in exchange for an international roster spot.

"We have been tracking Maynor for some time, so we are delighted to have finally secured his services," said Rapids director Paul Bravo. "He has vast experience in one of the best leagues in the world and his versatility will be an asset to us during the second half of the season. We look forward to welcoming him to our club."

Figueroa was the second defender to join Colorado on Friday after Sean St Ledger, who was waived on Aug. 1 by Orlando City for what the team called a "serious breach of club policy," also agreed to a deal.

The moves came after Colorado sold 21-year-old defender Shane O'Neill to Apollon Limassol in Cyprus.

"This is a bittersweet announcement for us," Bravo said of O'Neill's departure. "Although he is leaving us to fulfill his ambitions in Europe, he leaves an important legacy. We want to thank Shane for all that he has done for the club on and off the field.

"He will be missed but we are excited for him as he embarks on a new chapter in his career and wish him the best of luck in Europe."

In other moves on Friday, the Rapids loaned Dominique Badji to their USL affiliate in Charlotte and waived Ben Newnam.
