Ex-Western Sydney captain Robbie Cornthwaite: Players unhappy under Gombau

Former Western Sydney captain Robbie Cornthwaite has delivered a biting assessment of Josep Gombau's A-League coaching tenure, saying the Wanderers had been right to sack him.

Cornthwaite, who left the Wanderers in January for Malaysian outfit Perak, said the players weren't happy under Gombau and he criticised the Spaniard's playing style.

Western Sydney coach Josep Gombau has been sacked less than six months into his three-year A-League contract.

Western Sydney coach Josep Gombau admits his side is favoured by the A-League not following the widespread practice of starting all final-round matches at the same time.

The sixth-placed Wanderers go into their home game against Adelaide on Sunday knowing exactly what they need to secure a place in the finals, as the two teams immediately below them on the ladder, Brisbane and Perth, play each other the night before.

Most of the leading European leagues have simultaneous kick-off times in their...
