FC Seoul's defeat in AFC Champions League semi adds to Korean gloom

Western Sydney Wanderers beat FC Seoul 2-0 to advance to the Asian Champions League final for the first time in their history.

The reaction was one of anger and outrage. How had this been allowed to happen? How could a South Korean team lose so miserably? The media went into meltdown and the returning players were abused upon their return to the airport by fans that were calling for heads to roll.

But this was the reaction to the World Cup in June, not the Asian Champions League defeat of FC Seoul in the semifinal by Western Sydney Wanderers. The quadrennial competition is always going to get more play in the media than...

Western Sydney Wanderers in AFC Champions League final with Al Hilal

Western Sydney Wanderers beat FC Seoul 2-0 to advance to the Asian Champions League final for the first time in their history.

Australian club Western Sydney Wanderers prevailed over last year's AFC Champions League runners up, FC Seoul of South Korea, with a 2-0 win in the second leg of the semifinal to secure an historic berth in the final against Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal.

The A-League side's win brought to an end the winning streak of Korean clubs in the Asian club competition for the past three years. Western Sydney Wanderers became only the second Australian club -- after Adelaide United in 2008 -- to reach the showcase...

Western Sydney Wanderers success a fairytale for A-League

Marcello Lippi has had a remarkable coaching career, but even the best know failure. Winning the World Cup in 2006 is as good as it gets, and only he can say whether that triumph was made retrospectively sweeter by the first-round elimination four years later.

That World Cup was, he said, the only thing in his career to outrank the Asian Champions League win of the past year. That is another title he will now not be able to defend. In August, his Guangzhou Evergrande team were dumped out of the...

Marcello Lippi cops one match ban

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Italian coach Marcello Lippi has been provisionally suspended for one match for confronting a referee Guangzhou Evergrande's 1-0 loss in Sydney to the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Asian Champions League quarterfinals.

Lippi, who coached Italy to the World Cup title in 2006, will be banned from sitting in the dugout during Guangzhou's home leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The Asian Football Confederation announced the provisional ban on Sunday, saying the final decision...

Western Sydney prepare for AFC clash

Western Sydney Wanderers manager Tony Popovic.

Rarely has a fixture featured such a contrast in opponents. Only a week after bombing out of the inaugural FFA Cup 1-0 to semiprofessional minnow Adelaide City, the Western Sydney Wanderers now have to face Asian heavyweight Guangzhou Evergrande.

Here are three talking points for the Wanderers ahead of their AFC Champions League quarterfinal in Sydney on Wednesday:

1. The almighty dollar

It's almost impossible to analyse Guangzhou Evergrande without talking about money. Since being purchased by...
