Merrick calls A-League salary cap to be scrapped: 'Let's just get on with it'

Ernie Merrick
Wellington Phoenix manager Ernie Merrick has grown tired of the A-League's salary cap intricacies.

Wellington coach Ernie Merrick has called for an end to the A-League salary cap, arguing the competition is too mature for a system that's become outdated.

Each club can spend up to $2.6 million under the cap but are allowed to sign two marquees outside of it along with a season-long guest player -- essentially a third marquee.

With loyalty bonuses and other conditions thrown in, Merrick believes the set-up has passed its use-by date.

"I just don't know why we bother with a salary cap," he told...

A-League Report Cards: Adelaide United top the class, CCM fail

Adelaide United has claimed its first A-League title with a 3-1 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Grand Final.

Rob Brooks casts his eye over the best and worst of the 2015-16 A-League season.

ADELAIDE UNITED
Grade: A+
Regular season finish: First
Top goal-scorer: Bruce Djite (11)
Player of the season: Isaias. The Spaniard blended dogged defence with expert distribution, and scored from a sublime free kick in the Grand Final.
Overall: The Reds collected the premiership/championship double on the back of an astonishing run which saw them lose just one of their last 21 matches. That did not seem likely after...

Wellington Phoenix 'disturbed' by FFA's Besart Berisha ban reduction

The Wellington Phoenix are "disturbed" by Football Federation Australia's handling of a disciplinary case against Melbourne Victory player Besart Berisha.

The A-League club has asked for an explanation about the process which saw Berisha's sanction following a red carding this month reduced.

The 30-year-old Albanian was penalised and later handed a two-game suspension for kicking out at Phoenix captain Andrew Durante while getting treatment during Victory's 4-1 win on April 2.

But FFA's disciplinary...

No excuses for Wellington Phoenix in next A-League campaign

Ernie Merrick and the Wellington Phoenix put a tumultuous season to bed on Sunday, with a 2-0 loss to finals-bound Western Sydney Wanderers at Westpac Stadium.

The defeat closed the book on a disappointing campaign for the Nix, finishing a lowly ninth in the 10-team competition. The future, however, already looks brighter for the New Zealand side, with experienced A-League winners Gui Finkler and Kosta Barbarouses already inked-in to join former Victory boss Ernie Merrick in Wellington next season.
