Wake's Jon Bakero wins Hermann Trophy as top college player

Jon Bakero was named the top NCAA player ahead of the MLS draft.

Wake Forest senior forward Jon Bakero was awarded the Hermann Trophy as the best male college soccer player on Friday.

Bakero scored 16 goals and added 14 assists for Wake in 23 games this season, making him the NCAA's points leader. He was previously named ACC offensive player of the year.

Ian Harkes has signed a homegrown deal with his former academy club, D.C. United.

Hermann Trophy winner Ian Harkes signed his first pro contract on Monday, joining D.C United as a homegrown player.

Harkes, the son of former U.S. international John Harkes, was honored as the top college player earlier this month after leading Wake Forest to the NCAA championship game, which it lost to Stanford on penalties.
