West Ham crash out of Europa League as Southampton, Dortmund move on

West Ham were eliminated from the Europa League on Thursday after losing 2-1 to FC Astra in Romania.

Slaven Bilic left a host of first-team players at home ahead of the second leg -- despite the fact it was hanging in the balance following a 2-2 draw at Upton Park a week ago -- and Astra advanced to the playoff round 4-3 on aggregate.

Southampton's Ronald Koeman ruptures Achilles, needs surgery

In stark contrast to last season the Saints find themselves on much more stable ground, but questions remain on whether or not a Europa League campaign will harm their league ambitions.

Ronald Koeman is to go under the knife after rupturing his Achilles but the Southampton manager will be on the bench against Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday.

The Dutchman sustained the injury toward the end of training at the GelreDome on the eve of Saints' Europa League third qualifying round second leg.

The incident saw Koeman leave Arnhem behind the team coach in a van, which he boarded on crutches with his foot in a protective boot -- aids that will be needed again on Thursday.
