Stuttgart defender Antonio Rudiger may miss the start of the season -- and miss out on a summer transfer -- after being told he requires knee surgery.

Germany international Rudiger, who has been linked with clubs including Wolfsburg, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, reported back for preseason duty on Tuesday only to discover he needed an operation.

Stuttgart confirm Antonio Rudiger interest amid Chelsea, Atletico links

Antonio Rudiger's agent has said he would prefer to remain in Germany amid interest from Wolfsburg.

Stuttgart have confirmed there is widespread interest in Antonio Rudiger as Stuttgarter Zeitung reports that Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are willing to pay the defender's €18 million asking price.

VfB sporting director Robin Dutt said several clubs have shown an interest but warned the Germany centre-back, who is also a target for Wolfsburg, will not be allowed to leave at a cut-price fee.
