Meza leaves Veracruz on 33-game winless run

Francisco Venegas' stunning goal from beyond the halfway line wouldn't be enough as Mexico fell to Honduras in the Pan American Games.
Herculez Gomez explains why the new Leagues Cup is a first step toward more direct competition between MLS and Liga MX.

Veracruz extended its winless Liga MX run to 33 games on Tuesday in its 5-0 defeat to Queretaro and is now looking for a new manager after the resignation of veteran head coach Enrique Meza was confirmed on Wednesday.

Club owner Fidel Kuri announced he'd accepted Meza's resignation in a public letter, bringing an end to a reign that only began in June.

The under-fire owner indicated it wouldn't be just to only blame Meza for the club's abysmal form, slamming what he labeled the "deciduous" and "inefficient"...

Relegated Veracruz to pay way back into Mexico's top flight - manager

As MLS and Liga MX mull a new tournament like the SuperLiga of the mid-2000s, Taylor Twellman says the time is right for a new competition.
MLS commissioner Don Garber and Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla speak of their hopes of bringing unity to the two leagues as they announce the Campeones Cup.

Veracruz's 2-0 loss to Liga MX leader Leon on Sunday condemned the team to relegation and brought tears to the eyes of young goalkeeper Sebastian Jurado on the final whistle.

But Los Tiburones Rojos are likely to remain in Mexico's top division, as long as the club pays 120 million Mexican pesos (just over $6 million) to keep its place in a league looking to expand from 18 to 19 teams for next season.

"[Club owner] Fidel [Kuri] has the money to pay, but the idea was to save the team from relegation...

Liga MX to audit Veracruz finances; owner says 'nothing to hide'

Liga MX said Friday that it will conduct an audit of Veracruz's financial records, one day after Mexico's tax authorities announced its own probe into the use of alleged "double contracts" in the league.

"Double contracts" are when a player or employee signs one contract to register with the federation as an official document and then has another on the side directly with the club or separate entity.

In a statement relased Friday, the league said it has asked auditors Ernst & Young to review the...

Authorities to probe Liga MX clubs, players on alleged 'double contracts'

Mexico's Tax Administration Service (SAT) is set to investigate Liga MX clubs and players for the alleged existence of "double contracts."

"Double contracts" are when a player or employee signs one contract to register with the federation as an official document and then has another on the side directly with the club or separate entity.

There have been regular accusations of the existence of such contracts in Mexico, but the issue was blown open when Guillermo Vazquez accused Veracruz of using the...
