Injured Mat Ryan to miss Australia's next two World Cup qualifiers

National coach of Australia sits down to talk to ESPN FC's Jason Dasey about the future of Australian soccer at the AFC coaches conference after the Socceroos' Asian Cup win.

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan will miss Australia's next two AFC World Cup qualifiers after suffering a knee injury in Valencia's 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday night.

Ryan's place in the squad will be taken by Adelaide United veteran Eugene Galekovic.

The Socceroos face Bangladesh in Perth on Thursday before an away match against Tajikistan on Sep. 8.

"It's a blow for Mat to miss these games but he picked up a knock in Spain overnight and with the travel distance and the lateness of his club...

Valencia sign defender Aymen Abdennour from Monaco

Valencia have signed Aymen Abdennour from Monaco.

Valencia have announced the signing of Tunisia defender Aymen Abdennour, a player who had been linked with Chelsea as their pursuit of John Stones faltered.

Abdennour, 26, signed a five-year contract with Valencia, the club said, and joins from Monaco for an undisclosed fee.

"I chose Valencia CF out of all the offers I received, because it is a big club in Spain and Europe," Abdennour said on the club's website.

"I had no doubts. I am happy to be here and to be part of an ambitious and serious project,...

New Valencia centre-back Aderlan Santos says he is a "warrior" who will give everything for his new club.

Santos' arrival has not been met with approval from Valencia fans, who see the former Braga defender as an underwhelming replacement for Nicolas Otamendi.

Otamendi was the leader of the Los Che defence as they finished fourth in La Liga last year, with the Argentina international's superb performances leading eventually to a €45 million move to Manchester City.

This left Valencia short...

'There are no giants' in wide open Group H, says Lyon's Hubert Fournier

ESPN FC's Alejandro Moreno and Alexis Nunes look ahead to the Champions League campaigns for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

Lyon manager Hubert Fournier said "there are no giants" in Group H after his side were drawn with Valencia, Zenit St. Petersburg and Gent.

Last year's Ligue 1 runners-up received a favourable draw thanks to UEFA's new seeding policy that sees the champions from the top eight sides placed together in the top pot.

That moved perennial powers like Real Madrid and Manchester United into the second pot, and gave Lyon a legitimate chance to advance to the knockout stage.

"It's a pretty open group. That...
