1860 Munich fail to secure league license to play in German third tier

ESPN FC's Bundesliga correspondent Raf Honigstein rates the American performances in the Bundesliga this season.

Former Bundesliga club 1860 Munich face an uncertain future after failing to secure a license to play in the third tier next season.

Having finished third-from-bottom of the second tier, 1860 were relegated to Germany's lowest professional league after they lost their relegation playoff against Regensburg on Tuesday.

That, though, still required the payment of a significant registration fee to the German Football League (DFL) for a license for the season -- and Friday afternoon's deadline passed...

German minister Thomas De Maiziere: Lock up violent football fans

Police lined the pitch after 1860 Munich fans hurled seats onto the pitch.

German minister of the interior Thomas De Maiziere has said football fans who attack police or stewards "should be locked up."

De Maiziere, 63, made the remarks after a season marred by several outbreaks of violence both inside and outside grounds.

On Monday, Eintracht Braunschweig supporters invaded the pitch after their team failed to win promotion to the Bundesliga in a playoff against Wolfsburg.

The following day, 1860 Munich fans threw seats onto the pitch at the Allianz Arena as their team...

1860 Munich in chaos after shame of relegation to German third tier

1860 Munich could not avoid relegation to the third tier of German football.

Former Bundesliga champions 1860 Munich's relegation to Germany's third division has plunged the club into chaos amid recriminations over who is responsible.

"Nobody around the club ever expected or wanted that we dropped to the third division," 1860 said on their website on Wednesday. "We know that this scenario is not acceptable for the whole 'Lions' family. In such a situation, there are only losers unfortunately."

It could yet get worse for the Munich-based club, which will be forced to declare...

Ian Ayre frustrated by shareholder battles as he quits 1860 Munich

Ian Ayre warned that there was 'significant disagreement' between shareholders.

Former Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has left 1860 Munich after only eight weeks at the club, with his departure coming hours before the 1966 Bundesliga champions were relegated to the third tier amid chaotic scenes.

Ayre, 54, left his role at Anfield in February to become general manger at Munich, but told the Liverpool Echo that constant battles between the shareholders had drained him.

He said that although a budget for next season had been established, "there remains significant disagreement...
