Tigres to build statue for record scorer Gignac

A cat took to the pitch and got a touch on the ball in the Leagues Cup match between Real Salt Lake and Tigres.

Liga MX champions Tigres will build a statue outside Estadio Universitario in honor of French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who responded to the news by scoring a hat trick inside 23 minutes 3-1 win over Necaxa on Saturday.

Gignac broke Tigres' scoring record last weekend when he netted his 105th goal for the club in the 1-0 win against Pumas and was serenaded by 105 mariachis with a rendition of "El Rey" [The King] after the team's warm-up on Saturday.

Liga MX's dominance of the regional competition is well documented. Since 2006, the league's streak of 13 straight championships remains unbroken. Due to this historical supremacy, in its nearly six-decade history, the CCL has...

Cruz Azul, Monterrey the big winners; Tigres stand pat in Mexico's new-look winter transfer window

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- It's been a very different kind of transfer window in Liga MX this winter. The old "draft" -- a meet-up of club owners to thrash out deals and register players -- didn't take place and was replaced by a more conventional transfer period.

The domestic transfer window closed on Dec. 28, after being open for 12 days following the Apertura final, although the opportunity to sign players from outside of Mexico will be open until Jan. 31.

It's been a busy window so far, with the...

Club America is the favorite to win the Apertura 2018

Oribe Peralta and America are playoff-bound but the side have only won once in the last month, so is winning out that realistic?
Oribe Peralta and America are playoff-bound but the side have only won once in the last month, so is winning out that realistic?

This is a translation of an article that originally appeared on ESPN Deportes.

The Apertura 2018 Liguilla, or regular season, is now over after 17 weeks of matches for each of the teams in the Liga Bancomer MX, and now that the quarterfinal matchups are set, Club America appears perched as the favorite to win the title for the winter semester.

The team, led by former Mexican national team coach Miguel Herrera, finished in second place with 33 points and a goal difference of +16, the best in the...

With the 2018-19 Liga MX Apertura just past the midway point, the race to solidify a playoff position is set to heat up. Just eight points separate first place Cruz Azul and 13th place Tijuana, so it is sure to be another sprint to the finish in Mexico.
