Liga MX playoffs W2W4: Monterrey are favorites but expect the unexpected

Max Bretos and Herculez Gomez preview Monterrey's outlook for the Liguilla and explain why they're excited to watch American-born Jonathan Gonzalez.

The Liga MX playoffs are now set!

With an eye on the 2017 Apertura title, eight teams are now left in the championship race: Monterrey, Tigres, Morelia, Toluca, Club America, Cruz Azul, Leon and Atlas. The first legs of the quarterfinal round take place this Wednesday and Thursday, so all eight clubs have little time to prepare for the much-anticipated knockout stage.

Although there's rarely a lack of drama or entertainment, here are five things you won't want to miss.

1. Monterrey are the best...

Liga MX W2W4: Tigres' home streak will be put to the test against Toluca

To become a playoff contender, Rafael Puente and Lobos BUAP must find a way to defeat Cruz Azul on Saturday.

Ahead of this weekend's action, ESPN FC's Liga MX writers Tom Marshall, Nayib Moran and Eric Gomez look ahead to some of the league's biggest matchups and storylines.

Lobos BUAP vs. Cruz Azul

This game pits the two most intriguing sides so far this Apertura and two managers in Rafael Puente and Paco Jemez who don't have a reverse gear.

A total of 45 goals -- 20 for and 25 against -- have been scored in games involving Lobos BUAP so far this season, a full five more than next-highest Pachuca.

Tigres' Andre-Pierre Gignac meets feline namesake at Monterrey zoo

Andre-Pierre Gignac can strike fear into opposing defenses but not quite the fear that a tiger can.

Players that become a legend at a club normally have a statue, a stand, training ground, street name or something similar dedicated to them when they are elevated to undisputed hero status. Not Tigres' French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac. The 31-year-old has instead had a Bengal tiger at a local Monterrey zoo named after him, after a total of 708 of 2,000 local schoolchildren asked to vote on a suitable name for the animal chose Gignac.

Not that the 31-year-old is perturbed. Indeed, Gignac seemed...

Enner Valencia off to a good start to break Liga MX records

Edgar Mendez's goal helped Cruz Azul top Tijuana.
Edgar Mendez's goal helped Cruz Azul top Tijuana.

MEXICO CITY -- Liga MX's 2017 Apertura got underway, and the best scenes came from Tigres' Estadio Universitario, where Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia got a hat trick. The trifecta of Valencia, Eduardo Vargas and Andre-Pierre Gignac looks to steal a lot of headlines this season. Here are five stories from Week 1:

1. When luck goes Cruz Azul's way

Adrian Aldrete missed a penalty when the clock showed 19:27 in Cruz Azul's match with Tijuana. A hard left-footed shot shook Gibran Lajud's crossbar....

Herrera's return to America, Honda's impact among Apertura 2017 talking points

As Keisuke Honda's dream move at AC Milan came to an end, questions arise whether or not Pachuca is a good fit.

It's been a hectic summer for the Mexican national team, which on Thursday will play its 15th game in the last 54 days, but as the Gold Cup reaches its crescendo, Liga MX's Apertura is set to get going, with the opening games on Friday.

Here are ten talking points heading into the season:

Top two title challengers hail from the north

If you were to put down money on a team to win the Apertura 2017, you'd go with one of Nuevo Leon rivals Monterrey or Tigres.

Tigres will be rejuvenated...
