Wayne Shaw ate a pie late on in Sutton's FA Cup meeting with Arsenal.

Former Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has been charged with breaching FA rules after he ate a pie on the bench during a match against Arsenal last season.

A bookmaker had offered odds that Shaw, nicknamed the "roly-poly goalie," would eat a pie live on air during the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Arsenal at Sutton's Gander Green Lane stadium in February.

After National League side Sutton had made all three substitutes during the game, the backup keeper ate a pie, which was shown live by the...

Wayne Shaw feared his exit from FA Cup heroes Sutton United could lead to depression and revealed that he still has a "knot in his stomach'' about the incident.

The 45-year-old, who held several positions at the National League club, including backup goalkeeper, lost his job after being seen eating a pie on television during his giant-killing side's high-profile FA Cup fifth-round clash with Arsenal in February.

Sutton United have signed Will Puddy on loan after they were left without a goalkeeper following the resignation of deputy Wayne Shaw last week.

Starting keeper Ross Worner went off injured during their National League game at Torquay on Saturday, after the 45-year-old Shaw, who would have taken his place, resigned earlier in the week in the wake of the Football Association and Gambling Commission's investigations into a potential breach of betting rules.

Short on keepers after Wayne Shaw's exit, Sutton win with defender in goal

Sutton United were forced to field an outfield player in goal after goalkeeper Ross Worner went off injured during their National League game at Torquay on Saturday.

Usually, Wayne Shaw would have been on hand to deputise between the sticks, but the 45-year-old resigned earlier in the week after the Football Association and Gambling Commission launched an investigation into a potential breach of betting rules after he ate a pie on the bench during the FA Cup tie against Arsenal.
