UCL: Shakhtar Donetsk open campaign with win as Ajax draw

Ajax drew 1-1 at home to PAOK in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

Shakhtar Donetsk began their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Young Boys in the third qualifying round on Tuesday.

Bernard opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and the Swiss club's hopes of finding an own goal were dimed when Milan Vilotic was sent off with a second yellow card 10 minutes after half-time.

Yevhen Seleznyov added a goal in the 75th minute to give the Ukraine club a two-goal advantage ahead of the second leg.

BATE Borisov continued their quest to feature in the group...

UEFA bars Steaua Bucuresti coach Mirel Radoi from sideline

Mirel Radoi will not be on the bench for Steaua Bucuresti in the Europa League.

NYON, Switzerland -- UEFA has barred Steaua Bucuresti coach Mirel Radoi from the technical area at all European club competitions until he is qualified.

UEFA says its disciplinary committee fined the Romanian champions €50,000 euros for flouting rules this season.

The 34-year-old Radoi worked in the Steaua dugout at four Champions League qualifying matches despite not having the correct coaching license.

UEFA's ban takes effect on Thursday when Steaua hosts Rosenborg in a Europa League playoff...

Celtic, Steaua through to Champions League third qualifying round

Ronny Deila's Celtic will now face Azerbaijani champions Qarabag in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Celtic eased past Stjarnan in the return leg of their Champions League second qualifying round tie, but not before an early scare against the Icelandic part-timers.

The Hoops travelled to the tiny Samsungvollur stadium with a 2-0 advantage from last week's first leg in Glasgow but found themselves under some unexpected pressure after only six minutes when Olafur Karl Finsen shot the home side into a shock lead.

However, midfielder Nir Bitton eased the nerves when he levelled in the 32nd minute from...

Ludogorets lose, APOEL held as second round of qualifying begins

Adam Gyurcso's goal was enough for Videoton to defeat TNS in their first leg on Tuesday.

Two of last season's Champions League group-stage underdogs got off to a rough start in the first leg of the second qualifying round on Tuesday.

Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad, who beat Basel and held Liverpool to a draw a year ago, lost at home to Milsami 1-0.

Alexandru Antoniuc scored the only goal for the Moldovan champs in the 41st minute.

Meanwhile, Cypriot champions APOEL, quarterfinalists in 2012, were held to a goalless draw at home by Vardar of Macdeonia.

The news was a little better...

Bucharest rivals Dinamo and Steaua remain fierce rivals

Tempers flared when Bucharest rivals Dinamo and Steaua met again at the start of May.

In the latest edition of ESPN FC's derbies series, which features eyewitness insights into some of the biggest rivalries in world football, Nick Ames goes to Romania to experience the Bucharest  derby between Dinamo and Steaua.

BUCHAREST, Romania -- In a hotel bar on the southern outskirts of the city, the words tumble from Dinamo Bucharest executive director Ionel Danciulescu's mouth as the memories reassert themselves of his playing days.

"2008. That was the one," Danciulescu says. "We were...
