Benoit Assou-Ekotto signs for St Etienne after Tottenham exit

Benoit Assou-Ekotto was released by Tottenham in February.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and QPR defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto has returned to France to join St Etienne after almost a decade in the Premier League.

Assou-Ekotto, 31, has signed a one-year deal with the Ligue 1 side, crossing back over the Channel to play in the French league for the first time since leaving Lens for Spurs in 2006.

He made over 200 appearances for the North London club, but was loaned to QPR for the 2013-14 season, and did not feature at all for Spurs last term before his contract...

Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier signs new contract

Christophe Galtier will remain in charge of Saint Etienne after signing a new deal.

SAINT-ETIENNE, France -- Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier has signed a new two-year contract until 2019.

Galtier, who took charge in 2009, has helped build Saint-Etienne into a consistent side and his team has finished in the top five places for the past three seasons.

He is the club's third longest-serving coach, taking charge of 253 games.

Galtier says "I'm very happy to have reached an agreement to continue this adventure, but also very touched by the faith shown in me."

St Etienne beat Guingamp 2-1 in their final game of the Ligue 1 season but it was not enough to propel them into the Champions League.

Monaco's victory at Lorient and Marseille's defeat of Bastia meant that St Etienne had to settle for fifth place despite finishing the campaign with just one loss in their last 13 games.

Max Gradel scored twice for the home side and, while Claudio Beauvue responded with a penalty, his brace was enough to secure victory.

Guingamp nearly had the lead inside 10 minutes...

Evian's relegation to Ligue 2 was confirmed on Saturday night as a late penalty from Max Gradel condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at home to St Etienne.

Evian needed victory to retain any hope of avoiding the drop, but, while Mathieu Duhamel's strike three minutes before the break cancelled out Gradel's opener, the Ivory Coast forward scored from the spot with 10 minutes left.

Evian then had Kassim Abdallah sent off in the final seconds.

The result leaves Evian, who have won only once in their last 10...

St Etienne strengthened their grip on European qualification by hammering Nice 5-0 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday.

Loic Perrin and Jeremy Clement kicked off the rout in the first half, before the floodgates opened with Mevlut Erding, Max Gradel and Kevin Monnet-Paquet adding gloss to the scoreline.

The result moves Les Verts up to fourth in the standings with two games to go, while Nice remain 15th and need two points to secure Ligue 1 survival.
