OEIRAS, Portugal -- The final match of the Portuguese season produced a stunning spectacle at the sun-drenched Jamor national stadium on the outskirts of Lisbon as modest Desportivo das Aves, a club from a town of just 9,000 inhabitants, beat giants Sporting to lift the Portuguese Cup for the first time.

An opportunistic brace by Aves striker Alexandre Guedes, a former youth player at Sporting, set up a deserved victory. Fredy Montero's acrobatic effort in the 85th minute meant Aves had to survive...

Alexandre Guedes scored in the 16th and 72nd minutes, while Sporting's Fredy Montero struck in the 85th.

The result capped a tense week for Sporting after a group of fans forced their way into the team's training centre and assaulted...

Arsenal's Cristiano Ronaldo bid failed over £12m price tag - Arsene Wenger

Stewart Robson and the rest of the FC pundits aren't sold on the bookie's favourite, Mikel Arteta, leading Arsenal to the promised land.
ESPN's Arsenal correspondent Mattias Karen feels Arsenal need to bring in several key defenders if the club is to challenge for sivlerware.

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal failed to sign Cristiano Ronaldo as a teenager because they wouldn't match Manchester United's £12 million bid for Sporting CP starlet.

Wenger identified Ronaldo as the player he most regrets missing out on in an interview with Arsenal's official website, and described how close he was to signing the Portuguese player as an 18-year-old in 2003.

"He was here with his mother and we were very close," Wenger said. "Then Man United came in and they had Carlos Queiroz at...
