A last-gasp penalty from substitute Shaq Coulthirst secured Southend a narrow 1-0 win against York at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers seemed to be heading for a fourth successive home goalless draw but Coulthirst confidently stroked home a spot-kick two minutes from time to secure Phil Brown's side a third successive win.

The result was harsh on York who had the better of the first half with Luke Summerfield having a curling effort pushed wide of the right post by Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.

Portsmouth manager Andy Awford's job prospects took another hit after his side's 2-1 defeat at home to promotion-chasing Southend.

Goals from Ryan Leonard and Joe Piggott earned the Shrimpers the points as Phil Brown's men came from behind to cancel out Andy Webster's opener in a game which saw men from either side dismissed late on.

Pompey chairman Iain McInnes described the game as a "must win" in his programme notes in a thinly-veiled warning to Awford.

The hosts started strongly and turned their...

Barry Corr came off the bench to give 10-man Southend a thrilling 3-2 victory at Oxford after they trailed at half time.

Corr turned in Barry Coker's left-wing cross in the 82nd minute, just moments after Oxford twice had efforts cleared off the line.

Shrimpers boss Phil Brown was sent to the stand late on for persistent encroachment on to the pitch, but he could celebrate a fine win which saw his side play for an hour with a man short.

Southend were held to a third successive 0-0 draw at Roots Hall as Plymouth returned home to Devon with a point.

The Shrimpers handed a debut to new loan signing Joe Pigott, who went straight in to the side after joining from Charlton, but Phil Brown's side were still unable to make the breakthrough.

Pigott was immediately involved in the opening exchanges when he teed-up Ryan Leonard, who volleyed wide of the right-hand post from 10 yards out against his former team.

But Plymouth soon hit back and...

Lawson D'Ath earned Northampton their first point in six attempts as they held high-flying Southend to a 1-1 draw.

Cobblers made a bright start with D'Ath shooting wide from the edge of the box and Ryan Cresswell heading against the bar from Joel Byrom's free-kick.

Debutant Brendan Moloney then cut inside but shot wide, Ricky Holmes tested Daniel Bentley and Marc Richards headed wide.

In between, Michael Timlin tested Matt Duke and Shaquile Coulthirst fired straight at the Cobblers goalkeeper but Southend...
