I've spent a lot of time complaining about Saints' lack of goals of late and the solution is to add another striker to the squad; to both lift the burden off Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez and also to provide competition for places.
But who could they bring in to convert the chances that so often go begging?
It is easy to forget that Lukaku is still just 20. My personal first choice from this list, the Belgian has continued his fine form last season with West Brom to impress for Everton. It would seem likely that his future lies with either parent club Chelsea or Everton but until he has signed the contract, nothing is certain. Would be a major transfer coup for a club like Southampton.
Remy is a pure goal scorer and could be the ideal spearhead to Saints' attack. Only on loan at Newcastle and unlikely to stay at parent club QPR, Remy should be available in the summer. Wages likely to be an issue.
The Belgian forward has had a relatively quiet season in comparison to the previous campaign but has still scored 10 goals. At 23 he would suit the club's youthful outlook and although I expect him to leave Aston Villa this summer, there are likely to be several high-profile suitors. Will miss the World Cup through injury but will still be in demand.
A popular choice among Saints fans given his local roots, it is hard to ignore Danny Ings' goal-scoring performances for Burnley this season. He would certainly fit the brief as a young Englishman but is similar to Jay Rodriguez without being as good. Ings' goal-scoring record prior to this season is poor and it would represent the biggest risk from the list but also would likely carry the smallest fee. Worth the gamble.
Italian Borini has been on loan from Sunderland at Liverpool this season and although his goal record is far from spectacular, he has often stood out. With his future at Anfield looking bleak, he could be available at a bargain price.
This one is perhaps not such an obvious choice but the Eredivisie top scorer is likely to attract some attention this summer. The Icelandic forward has 27 league goals this season and his fair share of assists. Signing a succesful forward from the Dutch league can be a mixed bag though; for every Wilifried Bony and Luis Suarez there is a Jozy Altidore or Majeta Kezman.
It is fairly plain to see that Southampton need to bolster their forward options this summer and these are just some quick suggestions of forwards who aren't completely impossible for them to get. Hopefully Mauricio Pochettino and his team will have their own list of targets drawn up and the work is already being done behind the scenes to get their man.
Thought of a player that Pochettino should look at? Discuss Southampton's striking options with Chris here.
