Qin's stamp on Witsel puts CSL unease with international attention in spotlight

Shanghai Shenhua's Qin Sheng (26) received a straight red card for his stamp on Axel Witsel last weekend.

For former China national team midfielder Qin Sheng, international fame felt like an unlikely achievement. A competent defensive midfielder, Qin is a double league title winner from his time with Guangzhou Evergrande and also played a part in the Cantonese side's 2013 AFC Champions League-winning campaign. However, even in China, he is more famed for controversy than his footballing ability.

Yet, for all his reputation, the stamp on Axel Witsel that saw Qin achieve international infamy last weekend...

Giovanni Moreno gave Gus Poyet's side the lead with 15 minutes to go despite Shanghai playing almost three quarters of the game a man down following Qin Sheng's sending off in the 24th...

Carlos Tevez scored his first goal since moving to the Chinese Super League.
Shanghai Shenhua were knocked out of the AFC Champions League after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar.
Jason Dasey and Tampines Rovers striker Fazrul Nawaz discuss the impact Carlos Tevez and Oscar can have on Asian football.

Carlos Tevez will not be distracted by growing rumours he will quit the Chinese Super League (CSL) and return to Argentina, his Shanghai Shenhua coach Gus Poyet has said, as the former Manchester United striker struggles to settle at his new club.

The 32-year-old was signed by Shenhua from Boca Juniors for €11 million in January and scored on his CSL debut on Saturday as Shanghai handed last season's runners-up Jiangsu Suning a 4-0 thrashing on the opening day of the season.

But despite his...

The 2017 Chinese Super League (CSL) enjoyed a high-octane start last weekend, with Sunday night's fixtures between Guangzhou Evergrande and Beijing Guoan, as well as Shanghai Shenhua against Jiangsu Suning, providing fine examples of what the CSL has to offer.

However, it was not an entirely positive start. Indeed, while the games expected to stand out lived up to their billing, there were other fixtures which suggested it could be a long season for fans of other teams.

In the wake of recent rule...
