Gus Poyet backed by Shanghai Shenhua amid calls to be sacked

Gus Poyet took over at Shanghai Shenhua in November 2016.

Shanghai Shenhua president Wu Xiaohui has given his backing to Gus Poyet despite calls from sections of the club's support to remove him from his position as head coach.

Poyet's team are 10th in the 16-team Chinese Super League and have struggled since the former Sunderland and Brighton boss replaced Gregorio Manzano at the start of the season, leading to calls for him to be replaced.

But Wu has backed his club's head coach, and said Poyet would remain with Shenhua.

"Poyet out? We never gave a thought...

Hulk helps Shanghai SIPG beat rivals Shanghai Shenhua in CSL

Hulk was on target as SIPG overcame rivals Shenhua.

Two goals in the final minutes saw Shanghai SIPG pick up a 3-1 win over derby rivals Shanghai Shenhua on Saturday afternoon as Andre Villas-Boas' side won a keenly contested clash to close to within two points of Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande.

Hulk netted with a minute remaining to give SIPG the lead after Obafemi Martins had cancelled out Wu Lei's opener while an own goal by Li Yunqiu four minutes into added time added to the pain for Gus Poyet and his team.

Carlos Tevez has lunch with Argentina President Mauricio Macri in Shanghai

While Carlos Tevez has hardly set the Chinese Super League on fire with his footballing contribution, at least Shanghai Shenhua fans will be glad to know that he is pulling his weight on the international diplomacy front.

Indeed, the 33-year-old striker met with the president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, on Wednesday when the two shared a family luncheon at the Hyatt Hotel in Shanghai.
