West Ham held to draw in Romania as Sassuolo win in Europa League playoff

Bournemouth head coach Eddie Howe says there is always pressure on his team as they prepare for a trip to West Ham United.
Mark Noble converted a penalty as West Ham managed a draw.
Mark Noble coverted a penalty but West Ham settled for a draw in Romania.

West Ham suffered more jitters against Astra Giurgiu as they were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League playoff on Thursday.

The Hammers, bidding to reach the group stages for the first time, looked set to take a 1-0 lead back to the London Stadium next week thanks to Mark Noble's penalty on the stroke of half-time.

However, Romanian champions Astra, who beat Slaven Bilic's side in last season's qualifiers, stunned the visitors again when sub Denis Alibec hit a late equaliser.

Shakhtar Donetsk, Olympiakos and Fenerbahce all crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round on Wednesday, while Monaco, Ajax and Celtic got through to the playoff round.

Shakhtar will return to the Europa League this season, having reached the semifinals of the competition last campaign.

Zenit St Petersburg appoint ex-Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu

Mircea Lucescu led Shakhtar Donetsk to the Europa League semifinals this season.

Zenit St Petersburg have announced the appointment of former Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu on a two-year contract.

Lucescu will replace Andre Villas-Boas, who led Zenit to third place in the Russian league and missed qualification for next season's Champions League.

Former Porto, Chelsea and Tottenham boss Villas-Boas had announced in September that he would leave at the end of the season and said last month that he expects to take a year off
