Schalke's Christian Heidel relaxes demands on players' housing

New Schalke sporting executive Christian Heidel has said his focus is on players' happiness.

Schalke are no longer demanding that their players live within a 35-kilometre (21.7 miles) radius of the Veltins Arena.

Schalke began adding the clause to players' contracts a year ago to prevent them from moving to Dusseldorf, which is 60km away from the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen's working-class north.

However, Christian Heidel, who replaced Horst Heldt as Schalke's sporting executive in the summer, has told Sport Bild: "I prefer to have happy players."

Schalke director of sport Christian Heidel has backed Yevhen Konoplyanka to become an important player for the club.

Konoplyanka, 27, joined Schalke on loan from Sevilla in August, following the arrivals at the club of Nabil Bentaleb, Baba Rahman, Benjamin Stambouli, Coke, Naldo and Breel Embolo.

Seven matches into the Bundesliga season, however, and the Ukraine international has yet to make a real impact for the Royal Blues, who continue to struggle with only four points gained so far.

Schalke forward Breel Embolo could miss the remainder of the 2016-17 season after suffering an ankle injury in the club's 1-1 draw at Augsburg on Saturday, the Royal Blues announced on Sunday.

Embolo, 19, suffered the injury in a challenge with defender Konstantinos Stafylidis and was initially ruled out for the rest of 2016 with a broken ankle. On Sunday, the Switzerland international underwent surgery at the Hessingpark Clinic in Augsburg which revealed his injury to be worse than expected.

Schalke coach Markus Weinzierl claims the challenge that broke the ankle of striker Breel Embolo was "stupid."

Embolo, 19, suffered the injury in a challenge with Augsburg defender Konstantinos Stafylidis early on in Saturday's 1-1 Bundesliga draw and will now not play again in 2016.

Weinzierl, who left Augsburg in the summer to take on the Schalke job, does not believe there was malice in the tackle but is certain it was avoidable.
