Bayern Munich fans' 'extremely violent attack' leads to injuries and arrests

Fans were made to wait in a long queue before the start of Bayern's game at Schalke.

Numerous people were injured, some seriously, in what police have described as an "extremely violent attack" by some Bayern Munich fans who attempted to storm Schalke's stadium on Saturday.

Access to the stadium had been severely delayed because of body searches at the gates in the aftermath of last week's attack on the Stade de France in Paris.

Fans had been advised to arrive earlier for the game because of the increased measures.

Javi Martinez and Bayern opened an eight-point lead atop the Bundesliga table.

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller says opposing teams are now "trying anything" in a bid to try and stop the runaway league leaders.

Muller was speaking after Bayern ground out a 3-1 win over Schalke to open up an eight-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga.

It was hard going for the defending champions in Gelsenkirchen though as Schalke packed men in behind the ball, but Muller admits that is the sort of thing his side are now having to face.

Schalke unlikely to lure Mainz general manager Christian Heidel

Christian Heidel says his heart belongs to Mainz.

Mainz's general manager Christian Heidel has further distanced himself from reports he is set to become the new director of sport at Schalke next season.

Heidel is reported to have been targeted by the Gelsenkirchen club to replace Horst Heldt, who has been told that his contract -- which expires in June -- will not be renewed.
