VAR controversy: Freiburg won't protest against penalty decision vs. Mainz

A bizarre VAR decision caused mayhem in a Bundesliga game on Monday night when teams were ordered back on to the pitch at half time when the referee decided to award a penalty after watching a replay.
It was a miserable night for Mainz in Frankfurt with three calamitous errors and a red card seeing them lose 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the German Cup.
The referee helps himself to some sweets following a stoppage in play during the German Cup clash between Frankfurt and Mainz.

Freiburg will not protest about the VAR decision to award a penalty to Mainz during half-time of the Bundesliga match between the two on Monday, but said they remain unhappy about the incident.

Pablo de Blasis scored from the spot during the break after referee Guido Winkmann had earlier played on when Daniel Brosinski's shot hit defender Marc Oliver Kempf's hand.

The official was on his way off the pitch when video referee Bibiana Steinhaus told him he should watch a replay of the incident....

VAR gives Mainz bizarre penalty after half-time whistle

A bizarre VAR decision caused mayhem in a Bundesliga game on Monday night when teams were ordered back on to the pitch at half time when the referee decided to award a penalty after watching a replay.

BERLIN -- Pablo de Blasis scored one of the most remarkable goals in Bundesliga history -- during the half-time break -- as Mainz beat relegation rivals Freiburg 2-0 amid fresh protests against Monday night games.

Daniel Brosinski tried his luck before half-time and his shot took a deflection off Freiburg defender Marc Oliver Kempf's hand.

Referee Guido Winkmann, who had allowed play to continue, then blew for half-time and was on his way off the pitch when notified by video referee Bibiana Steinhaus,...

The game kicked off and, for 45 minutes, not a great deal happened. And then, after the teams had gone for their half-time cup of tea:

And so, after a lengthy delay, the players returned and Pablo de Blasis opened the scoring for the hosts.

Half-time duly resumed but, when it came time to restart:

Just when you thought you'd seen it all... You can't make this stuff up!...

U.S.'s Caleb Stanko injures meniscus with Freiburg

Caleb Stanko will be sidelined for Freiburg in the coming weeks.

United States international Caleb Stanko is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a meniscus injury with Freiburg.

Stanko, who made his only national team appearance in a World Cup qualifier in 2016, injured the meniscus in his right knee and will have surgery, the German club announced on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old has only made six appearances -- one start -- in the Bundesliga this year, last playing in January. The Michigan native joined Freiburg in 2011.
