Portland Timbers add Costa Rican defender Julio Cascante

Julio Cascante faced off against the Timbers in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2016.

The Portland Timbers acquired center-back Julio Cascante from Costa Rican giants Saprissa on Tuesday.

The Timbers used targeted allocation money for the transfer, which is pending approval of his visa and other documentation.

Cascante, who is from Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, has played in 107 matches with 93 starts since his professional debut in his native country in 2011.

He made one appearance for the national team in a friendly in December 2015.

Minnesota United loans out Johan Venegas to Saprissa

Johan Venegas found limited success with Minnesota United.

Minnesota United has loaned attacker Johan Venegas to Saprissa for a year, the Costa Rican club confirmed on Friday.

Venegas scored two goals with five assists in 22 games for the Loons last season after moving to Minnesota in a trade with the Montreal Impact.

Although he has been a target of criticism in Minnesota, he has performed for Costa Rica with nine goals in 44 appearances for the national team, inlclding the opener in a 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over the United States last year.

Former Costa Rica and Real Salt Lake star Alvaro Saborio retires

Alvaro Saborio is Real Salt Lake's all-time leading goal scorer.

Former Costa Rica and MLS striker Alvaro Saborio has announced his retirement following a reported dispute with Saprissa fans. 

Saborio, who earned over 100 caps with Costa Rica, recently joined Saprissa after deciding to leave D.C United in December.

According to CRHoy.com, Saborio came into conflict with fans in a recent loss and afterward  he decided to retire "more than anything to protect my family."
