PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Timbers have acquired defender Roy Miller, who played six seasons in Major League Soccer before leaving for Saprissa of Costa Rica's top division.

Miller will remain with Saprissa through February to take part in the team's CONCACAF Champions League play.

The 32-year-old has made 48 appearances with Saprissa across all competitions for the past two seasons. The team won its 33rd Primera League championship last year.

Saprissa beat the Portland Timbers 4-2 in their Group B match of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night.

Portland made a dream start to the game as Diego Valeri dribbled into the penalty area and snuck a quick-fire shot past Saprissa's Danny Carvajal in the fifth minute for an early 1-0 lead.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Kianz Froese scored in the first half as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Honduras' Olympia 1-0 on Wednesday night in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The 19-year-old Canadian midfielder poked a shot home in the 42nd minute that goalkeeper Noel Valladeres could only get a piece of before it looped up and over a helpless defender.

The Whitecaps moved level with the Seattle Sounders atop Group F ahead of their showdown next week.
