Argentina's San Lorenzo to name stadium after Pope Francis

The pope has smiled on San Lorenzo, and the Argentine club has returned the love.

South American champions San Lorenzo are already known as the Saints, and now, their new stadium will have a heavenly name as well.

The Argentine club chose on Wednesday to name their new stadium after their most famous fan: Pope Francis.

Among other business, the executive committee met to discuss what to call the Copa Libertadores champions' new park, and when "Pope Francisco" was proposed, the board members quickly adopted it.

San Lorenzo capture first Copa title

San Lorenzo head coach Edgardo Bauza says lifting the Copa Libertadores is the final piece of the trophy-winning jigsaw for the ten-time Argentine league champions.

It has been a long wait, but San Lorenzo of Argentina -- semifinalists in 1960, in the first version of the Copa Libertadores -- have finally won South America's premier club competition.

In front of their own fans they beat Nacional of Paraguay 1-0 to take the trophy 2-1 on aggregate.

The club have an illustrious supporter: Pope Francis is a staunch San Lorenzo fan, and perhaps he organised a little divine intervention. Because this was a game won, not by the hand of God, but perhaps by a hand...

San Lorenzo players celebrate winning the Copa Libertadores over Nacional for the first Copa triumph in the team's 100-plus-year history.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- San Lorenzo of Argentina, Pope Francis' favourite team, defeated Paraguayan side Nacional 1-0 to win the Copa Libertadores title for the first time on Wednesday.

Nestor Ortigoza converted a penalty in the 36th minute to give the club their first major international title in their 106-year history. They clinched the title 2-1 on aggregate. The teams drew 1-1 last week in Paraguay.
