MLS stopped paying Marvell Wynne 3 months after heart surgery - sources

Marvell Wynne has not played this season after undergoing heart surgery in the preseason.

MLS ceased paying San Jose Earthquakes defender Marvell Wynne in July, a little more than three months after the 12-year veteran underwent season-ending -- and perhaps career-ending -- heart surgery, multiple sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

The versatile defender signed a new contract during the offseason, a two-year deal which was set to pay him just over $257,000 this season, according to data provided by the MLS Players Union.

Timbers beat NYCFC to go top in West; Jozy Altidore lifts Toronto by San Jose

Diego Valeri was the only player to etch his name on the score-sheet, with the Timbers winning away to a hostile NYCFC crowd.

Diego Valeri scored for the seventh straight game to match the MLS record and help the Portland Timbers move to the top of the Western Conference with a 1-0 win at New York City FC on Saturday.

The only goal came just before halftime when Darren Mattocks dispossessed Andrea Pirlo deep in his own zone -- leaving the Italy legend calling for a foul that never came -- and fed Valeri in the center of the box.
