Napoli fail to sign Roberto Soriano from Sampdoria before deadline

Roberto Soriano will stay with Sampdoria after his move to Napoli could not be done in time.

Napoli failed to complete the signing of Roberto Soriano from Sampdoria in time for his transfer to go through on deadline day, after beating Serie A rivals AC Milan to the midfielder.

An agreement had been reached between the two clubs and the player late on Monday evening, but time ran out as Napoli drew up the contract and, according to Sky Sport Italia, they failed to meet the 11 p.m. deadline to send his contract to Lega Serie A officials for ratification.

Sampdoria issue hands-off warning for clubs who want 'discount' stars

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has reacted angrily to low bids for his players.

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has warned rival clubs keen on snapping up his club's best players that they are not a "discount supermarket."

AC Milan failed in their bid to sign Roberto Soriano for less than the €10 million release clause he has in his contract, while it was reported on Thursday that Inter Milan had made a bid for Italy international Eder.

Both bids have been rejected by Sampdoria, and Ferrero declared via Twitter that his club does not sell on the cheap.

Harald Nielsen, Denmark's 1960 Olympic hero, dies at 73

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Harald Nielsen, a Denmark center forward known as "Gold Harald" after scoring six goals at the 1960 Rome Olympics, has died. He was 73.

His wife, Rudi Nielsen, told Danish news agency Ritzau on Wednesday that "my beloved husband died Aug. 11 after a long illness." The Danish Football Federation also confirmed the death. No details of the illness were given.
