Man City through vs. Steaua, Rostov thrash Ajax to reach UCL group stage

Fabian Delph scored the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City secured their place in the Champions League group stage with an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest to win 6-0 on aggregate as Joe Hart made his first start of the season.

Hart, expected to leave City before the close of the transfer window due to the impending arrival of Claudio Bravo, captained the club in what could prove to be his last appearance at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City will enjoy Champions League football in Pep Guardiola's first season as manager.

UCL: Shakhtar, Olympiakos, Fener out as Celtic and Monaco reach playoff

ESPN FC's Craig Burley and Paul Mariner think Carlo Ancelotti's UCL pedigree could make them favourites to win the tournament.

Shakhtar Donetsk, Olympiakos and Fenerbahce all crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round on Wednesday, while Monaco, Ajax and Celtic got through to the playoff round.

Shakhtar will return to the Europa League this season, having reached the semifinals of the competition last campaign.

Yuya Kubo scored twice in a seven-minute span for Young Boys early in the second half to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate, before both Fred and Yaroslav Rakitskiy misfired in the shootout...

Shakhtar Donetsk began their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Young Boys in the third qualifying round on Tuesday.

Bernard opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and the Swiss club's hopes of finding an own goal were dimed when Milan Vilotic was sent off with a second yellow card 10 minutes after half-time.

Yevhen Seleznyov added a goal in the 75th minute to give the Ukraine club a two-goal advantage ahead of the second leg.

BATE Borisov continued their quest to feature in the group...

CSKA Moscow hold on to take Russian title with win over Rubin Kazan

CSKA Moscow fought off a challenge from surprise title contenders FC Rostov to win the Russian Premier League for the sixth time on Saturday.

Roared on by thousands of travelling fans, CSKA held on to an early lead to win 1-0 at Rubin Kazan, knowing that if Rubin had equalised Rostov would have taken the title on the head-to-head record.

Alan Dzagoev scored the vital goal for CSKA with a fierce shot in the 19th minute, and goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev preserved the lead with a spectacular double save...

Russian club Rostov says doping tests clean after FIFA sting

Russian title contenders FC Rostov say all of their players were clean after a surprise doping test conducted last week by FIFA.

Rostov said in a statement on their website that they had received the results of tests taken after last week's 3-1 Russian league win over Dynamo Moscow.

The club say "all the doping tests turned out to be clean" and that its players did not use banned substances.

The testing followed reports in Russian media that Rostov had been trying to buy the banned substance meldonium.
