Aaron Wilbraham headed his 15th goal of the season as Bristol City opened up an eight-point gap at the top with a 1-0 home victory over Rochdale.

The veteran striker lost his marker following Luke Freeman's 14th-minute corner to direct a powerful effort into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

From then on City had to defend solidly against impressive opponents, who would have taken at least a point with better finishing.

Rochdale had some excellent first-half chances, Peter Vincenti wasting the best...

Sheffield United tightened their grip on a League One play-off place with a 2-1 win at Rochdale.

Goals either side of the break from Marc McNulty and John Brayford made it four wins from the last five games for Nigel Clough's men.

Rochdale started brightly, with Peter Vincenti heading Michael Rose's free-kick over the crossbar five minutes in.

But the Blades edged a tight first half when they opened the scoring after 12 minutes, Marc McNulty curling a fine finish wide of Josh Lillis in the Dale goal.

Ian Henderson's scrappy second-half goal gave Rochdale a 1-0 win against Chesterfield at Spotland.

A first half short on quality and goalmouth incident yielded just one chance at either end of the field.

First Tom Kennedy llifted a cross towards the edge of the six-yard area where Peter Vincenti stole in ahead of his marker but sent a powerful header over the crossbar.

The Spireites then went close with Sam Clucas picking out Gary Roberts but the veteran wideman's header was saved by Dale goalkeeper...

A rip-roaring start paved the way for Peterborough to see off Rochdale 2-1 at the ABAX Stadium.

The damage was done early on with both Posh goals arriving in the opening seven minutes.

Michael Smith's right-wing delivery was headed in by Harry Beautyman in the fourth minute and only a fine Josh Lillis save prevented the same combination from having further joy shortly afterwards.

But, from the resulting Joe Newell corner, Christian Burgess was on hand to bundle in the home side's second goal.

Walsall almost squandered a three-goal half-time lead but held on to beat play-off rivals Rochdale 3-2 at the Banks's Stadium.

Dale made a tremendous effort to save the match and pulled two goals back in the second half, but the Saddlers held on to clinch their first home win in six attempts and move above their rivals in the Sky Bet League One table.

Walsall hit three goals in a remarkable nine-minute spell of the first half to rock the visitors, central defender James O'Connor heading them in front...
