SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain -- As he sits down for an exclusive interview with ESPN FC, Real Sociedad manager David Moyes wears the smile of a contented man. It's two days after his side opened the Spanish league season with a 0-0 draw at Deportivo and, having driven the 400 miles back from A Coruna along Spain's northern Atlantic Coast, Moyes has just signed midfielder Asier Illarramendi, who left La Real in 2013, back from Real Madrid.

David Moyes' Real Sociedad failed to score again in their second game of the Primera Division season as they played out a goalless draw with Sporting Gijon at Anoeta.

Sporting held Real Madrid to a goalless draw the previous week and also produced a solid display here. Why didn't Asier Illarramendi work out at Real Madrid? FC's Alejandro Moreno gives his thoughts.

Asier Illarramendi said his time at Real Madrid had not worked out as he had hoped after completing a return to Real Sociedad.

Illarramendi joined Madrid from Sociedad in a €38.8 million deal in 2013 but struggled to win a regular place under then coach Carlo Ancelotti.

And with new Bernabeu manager Rafa Benitez having paid €30m for Croatia international Mateo Kovacic, 25-year-old Illarramendi rejoined his old club in a move reported to be worth an initial €16 million.

Asier Illarramendi has left Real Madrid to complete his return to La Liga rivals and boyhood club Real Sociedad.

Illarramendi, 25, signed for Los Blancos from Sociedad in 2013 but his future at the club under new coach Rafa Benitez has been the subject of conjecture.

The midfielder, who made 30 league appearances last season, has now sealed a transfer back to San Sebastian after passing a medical and agreeing a six-year contract with the club.

Asier Illarramendi confirms Real Madrid to Real Sociedad transfer

Why didn't Asier Illarramendi work out at Real Madrid? FC's Alejandro Moreno gives his thoughts.

Asier Illarramendi said a return to Real Sociedad from Real Madrid was his "first option" as he moves closer to sealing a transfer back to his first club.

Illarramendi, 25, signed for Los Blancos from Sociedad in 2013 but his future at the club under new coach Rafa Benitez has been the subject of conjecture.

AS reports a deal in the region of €17 million, plus add-ons, has been agreed between the two sides to secure his return to San Sebastian.
