What now for QPR and Loic Remy?

Loic Remy poses with Harry Redknapp after signing for QPR in 2013, but his future at Loftus Road is far from certain.

So what now for Queens Park Rangers and want-away striker Loic Remy? The club had agreed a fee -- more than the reported 8 million pounds -- with Liverpool for the striker, with the deal worth around 10.5 million.

The France star was left out of Rangers' preseason tour to Germany and instead flew out to Boston to meet with Liverpool and underwent a string of medical tests to ensure there were no surprises in store. Meanwhile, manager Harry Redknapp's Rangers were in Germany. The deal was all set to be completed on Thursday afternoon and the Rangers were ready to rebuild with the windfall.

- Redknapp : I'm delighted to have Remy

As far as QPR were concerned, Remy had passed his medical and was sitting around in an American hotel room waiting for the i's to be dotted and the t's to be crossed on his new contract. But by Friday, news filtered out that the deal had collapsed, and it soon transpired that the news was coming from Liverpool's end -- but no one from Anfield had been in touch with QPR to tell them the deal had collapsed.

Redknapp, when asked Saturday afternoon about a holdup, said: "I didn't know there was a holdup. I thought it was done; is it not done? As far as I knew at the start of the week, he was gone."

Rodgers was more cryptic; he admitted the deal had gone to dust but would not say why. It was strange, as if he was almost proud to be keeping a secret from us all. Liverpool would not make any official comment on why the deal had broken down, but Redknapp was not happy with the suggestion it was on medical grounds and made that clear at the press conference to unveil Rio Ferdinand on Monday morning.

Redknapp flat-out refused to accept that Remy had failed a medical; the manager immediately said there must have been other reasons for the Kop club to pull out of what looked like a good deal for all concerned. Rangers were offloading a want-away player for more than expected, and Liverpool were taking on a France international at a snip in the current climate. And Remy was getting the Champions League football he craved.

Maybe Remy did fail a medical. He is reported to have a long-standing heart condition that does not affect his day-to-day fitness but shows up under examination. His 2010 move to Marseille was delayed after medical issues needed further investigation, and president Jean-Claude Dassier revealed Remy suffered from a possible defect. However, the switch was completed and he passed more tests after that, as Redknapp confirmed.

Or maybe Remy pushed Liverpool too far with what he felt he was worth. When he moved to Loftus Road -- with Rangers bottom of the table -- he did so because they offered him more cash than Newcastle. The Toon had agreed to a fee with Marseille; he was expected on Tyneside but popped up down south and joined the Rangers after going AWOL. Perhaps Liverpool got tired of growing demands?

Conspiracy theorists might even claim that when Liverpool's unfancied striker, Fabio Borini, refused to move to Sunderland for a whopping 14 million pounds, it sparked a trail of events that have left almost all concerned with egg on their face.

Redknapp says Remy will be back training at Harlington next week, but it looks unlikely he will play for the club again. When he finally did join Newcastle, it was on loan for last season because he didn't fancy a season in the Championship when Rangers needed him most. Redknapp did say that Liverpool's loss was his gain, but I think that is more in annoyance at the way the Merseyside club handled the situation.

Rangers want to bring Troy Deeney, Niko Kranjcar and Mathieu Valbuena to the club; they may say they want to keep Remy, but I don't think their heart is really in it.
