Rostov to avoid UEFA discipline for banana-throwing incident

FC Rostov and PSV Eindhoven played out a 2-2 draw in the Champions League.

UEFA says it has not opened a disciplinary case against Russian club FC Rostov after a banana was thrown onto the field during a Champions League game.

Anti-discrimination group FARE Network, which provides observers at European games, had notified UEFA of the incident at Wednesday's 2-2 draw between Rostov and PSV Eindhoven.

FARE said it believed the banana had been targeted at PSV left back Jetro Willems, who is black.

MOSCOW -- Russian club FC Rostov are likely to face a UEFA disciplinary case for fan racism after a banana was thrown onto the field during a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven.

The FARE Network, which monitors racist incidents for UEFA, said the banana was thrown about eight minutes into Wednesday's 2-2 draw.

The banana remained on the field for at least 15 minutes.

FARE director Piara Powar said the body will send an official notification to UEFA.
