Former Newcastle United striker Xisco Jimenez struck a brace as champions Muang Thong United sent out a warning to their challengers with a 4-0 victory at Bangkok Glass on the opening day of the Thai League (T1) season.

Muang Thong fans will be expecting another domestic trophy in 2017.

After a break of almost five months, Thailand league action resumes on Saturday, with Muang Thong United ready to defend their title from a number of potential challengers.

Last season ended six weeks early, due to the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. But many players remained active. Between late September and mid-December, Thailand saw their national team draw with Australia in a 2018 AFC World Cup qualifier, and retain the AFF Suzuki Cup with victory over Indonesia in the final.

Buriram United striker Diogo Luis Santo put in a match-winning performance as the Thai side beat Laos champions Lanexang United 2-0 to claim the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2-1 on aggregate.

In the second leg of the final in Thailand on Sunday night, the Brazilian tormented his opponents throughout. He won and scored a first-half penalty before Go Seul-ki added a second early in the second half.
