United States opens CONCACAF U-20 Championship with loss to Panama

The United States under-20 team suffered a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Panama on Saturday, a disappointing start in the Americans' quest to qualify for this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Panama was down to 10 men in the 17th minute after Justin Simons caught U.S. midfielder Tyler Adams with a late tackle and was shown a straight red card. Adams, of the New York Red Bulls, was injured on the play and could not continue.

But Panama took the lead 20 minutes later when Leandro Avila's shot took a deflection...

Freddy Adu's Portland Timbers trial ends without a contract offer

Freddy Adu's trial with the Portland Timbers has ended without an offer of an MLS contract.

Adu, 27, was invited to preseason camp with the Timbers by his former U.S. under-23 coach Caleb Porter, but the former teenage phenom will not be joining the team.

"Freddy is no longer with us," Porter told The Oregonian. "He had two weeks and we were up front and honest with him about where we're at. More than anything, you look at the depth, there's just not going to be a spot."

Veteran defender and former MLS Cup winner Nat Borchers is hoping to add a second title to his collection with the Portland Timbers.
Nat Borchers has decided to retire at age 35.

Portland Timbers defender Nat Borchers announced his retirement on Friday.

Known for his long red beard, Borchers decided to hang up his boots after 14 seasons at age 35.

"I have given the game everything and will step away extremely grateful to have played 14 professional seasons," he said in a statement. "While this decision was tremendously difficult, I am proud of my contribution to this chapter of Major League Soccer.
