Stats and facts from the January PSL transfer window

The transfer window has now slammed shut in South Africa in what was a frenetic few weeks for clubs in the Premier Soccer League.

Unless there are free agents to be signed, these are the squads that will take the teams to the end of the season, and some of them look much improved on what they had before the New Year.

KweséESPN picks out some stats and facts from the January window.

Who is really leading the charge in the PSL?

With the South African Premier Soccer League fixtures again thrown into a shambles by SuperSport United's run to the CAF Confederation Cup Final, it is tough to gauge just who is in command in the title race this season.

SuperSport have played half the number of matches (six) of leaders Baroka FC, and while there is something to be said for getting points on the board, it is clear that the Limpopo club are in something of a false position.

PSL referees in the spotlight more than ever

A coach complaining about referees is as old as time, but this season there appears to be more anguish than ever in South Africa's Premier Soccer League over the standard of the officiating.

But it has been a huge talking point that threatens the integrity of the league, and...

Celtic set up Telkom Knockout final with Wits after shoot-out success

Bloemfontein Celtic booked their place in the final of the Telkom Knockout competition with a penalty shoot-out victory over hosts Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Celtic triumphed 4-3 in the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw and will now meet Bidvest Wits in the decider at Durban's Princess Magogo Stadium on December 2.

The visitors just about deserved their win as they took the lead in extra time through Jacky Motshegwa, only to be pinned back by an equaliser from Rendani Ndou.

Wasteful Orlando Pirates dumped out of Telkom Knockout

Polokwane City stunned Orlando Pirates to advance to a first ever Telkom Knockout semifinal after a 4-2 penalty shootout win at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

City twice led twice through a brace from Rendani Ndou, but Pirates hit back through Ntsikelelo Nyauza and Mpho Makola. The match went to penalties after the teams ended extra-time at 2-2, and after Marc van Heerden and Nyauza missed for the home side, City celebrated what was a famous victory.

City were ahead inside two minutes when Rodney...
