Indonesia need more superstars like Michael Essien for 2018 season

PJ Roberts assesses if Rafael van der Vaart is suited for a move to Indonesian club Bali United.

After making the 2016 final, Indonesia will fancy their chances at November's AFF Suzuki Cup, which will introduce a new home-and-away format for the group stage.

But ASEAN success is just one of the hopes for Southeast Asia's most populous nation.

Here are five 2018 football wishes for Indonesia.

1. More big names

The build-up to the 2017 Indonesia Liga One season was sent into the stratosphere by the arrival of five world stars. Michael Essien, Didier Zokora, Mohamed Sissoko, Peter Odemwingie,...

JDT owner TMJ hits back at former coach Mario Gomez over unpaid wages

PJ Roberts delves into JDT's recent signings that will strengthen the Malaysian champions in 2018.

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) president Tunku Ismail Ibrahim (TMJ) has hit back at former head coach Mario Gomez over claims of unpaid wages.

Gomez left the club in January after almost two years in charge -- a period that included two Malaysia Super League titles and the 2015 AFC Cup.

"We will see each other in court soon," Gomez told the Malay...

Gomez won several honours during his time in Malaysia, including the 2015 AFC Cup. However, he abruptly left the Malaysia Super League (MSL) champions in January, with JDT II boss Benjamin Mora moving into his position.

It clearly wasn't a smooth parting of the ways, and Gomez remains locked in a legal dispute with his...

JDT ex-boss Mario Gomez new coach of Michael Essien's Persib Bandung

Terens Puhiri turned on the jets as he outran nearly everyone on the opposing team in the Indonesian first division.

Former Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) head coach Mario Gomez will try to rebuild the hopes of one of Indonesian football's biggest clubs after being appointed the new manager of Persib Bandung.

The Argentine has been entrusted with restoring former glories to the Java club after a disappointing finish in 2017, despite the presence of Ghana superstar Michael Essien and ex-England striker Carlton Cole.

Gomez is best remembered in Malaysia for leading JDT to the 2015 AFC Cup, while he also won Malaysia Super...
