Paris Saint Germain's Edinson Cavani a 2/10 with miss of the season vs. St Etienne

Ten-man Paris Saint-Germain somehow escaped from Stade Geoffroy-Guichard with a point on Friday after a late Mathieu Debuchy own goal rescued an undeserved 1-1 draw for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Positives

There were very few positives to take from the result, but the fact that it was even a draw will be seen as a big bonus by PSG, who knew they were far from at their best.

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was arguably the biggest plus point, saving a first-half penalty and making a few other stops to keep Unai Emery's men in a game that they did not deserve to remain alive in.

Negatives

Too many -- collectively, the performance was so bad that it would be unfair to single out one or two players -- even if some were worse than others.

Whether it was simply an off (very off) night, the absence of a number of regular starters, or lacking post-Coupe de la Ligue final win motivation, it was abysmal.

Manager rating out of 10

4 -- Emery's starting XI was questionable, even with so many players missing, but his changes were dictated to him (to a degree) once Presnel Kimpembe saw red.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Alphonse Areola, 7 -- The difference between one point and none and not the decisive factor in a positive or negative result for the first time this season. Without his penalty save to deny Saint-Etienne goal scorer Remy Cabella a second, PSG would have lost.

DF Thomas Meunier, 3 -- Starting right-back with Dani Alves out injured, he missed an opportunity to impress by putting in a performance well below his usual standards.

DF Marquinhos, 3 -- Captain of the side with Thiago Silva a substitute, he struggled to handle the responsibility and looked out of his depth in the raging Chaudron atmosphere.

DF Presnel Kimpembe, 2 -- Sent off for a second booking after 41 minutes, he was one of the worst performers on the night. At least he got involved, unlike some others, but that cannot disguise a woeful effort. Hopefully, it was a one-off.

DF Layvin Kurzawa, 3 -- Ridiculously poor. The sooner the season finishes, so that he can get his move away and both parties can move on, the better. His poor showing justified Emery's recent decisions to leave him out and his World Cup hopes are well and truly on the line. Booked in the first half.

Edinson Cavani reacts after missing an easy goal in PSG's 1-1 draw with St Etienne.
Edinson Cavani inexplicably missed in front of a wide-open goal in a woeful outing for PSG.

MF Lassana Diarra, 2 -- Practically invisible. He went off at half-time with a yellow card to his name and was not missed after his useless first half.

MF Giovani Lo Celso, 3 -- Summed up by a pathetic wayward first-half shot, it was not his finest performance and he will know that. Luckily for him, there were worse on the pitch.

MF Adrien Rabiot, 6 -- His 200th PSG appearance was not one of his best, but at the same time, was also not one of his worst. One of the best of a bad bunch in Saint-Etienne.

FW Javier Pastore, 3 -- He got on the ball more than the likes of Diarra, but he showed nothing when in possession. Cautioned 43 minutes in, he slipped out of the match with next to no trace.

FW Kylian Mbappe, 3 -- After his excellent showing against Monaco to win the Coupe de la Ligue in Bordeaux, he was a shadow of the player who bossed the match at Matmut Atlantique.

FW Angel Di Maria, 4 -- He tried to make things happen, but still was not much better than most of his teammates and resorted to trying to dive to win a penalty late on.

Substitutes

DF Thiago Silva, 6 -- Sent on at half-time to replace Diarra and fill the void left by the dismissed Kimpembe, the defence was more solid with him on the pitch.

FW Edinson Cavani, 2 -- Given 23 minutes toward the end, he will wish that he had not been sent on after missing an absolute sitter in farcical fashion.
