PAOK president Ivan Savvidis given 3-year ban for taking pitch with gun

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis stormed the pitch against AEK Athens.

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis has been banned from all football grounds for three years after storming the pitch during a game against AEK Athens earlier this month while appearing to carry a gun in a hip holster.

The Greek Super League disciplinary committee docked the club three points, ending their title chances, and fined them €63,000. PAOK have also been ordered to play their next three home games behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, AEK Athens were awarded the match, abandoned after the chaotic...

Greece lifts suspension on football league after violence concerns

PAOK chairman Ivan Savvidis still faces action for taking to the pitch with a gun.

The Greek government has lifted its suspension of the country's football league after saying it received a commitment from clubs to reform rules aimed at combating violence.

League organisers say games will restart on Saturday with additional midweek matches to be planned to compensate for the two-week suspension.

The government announced the decision on Tuesday following talks with Greek clubs and a delegation from FIFA, which visited Athens this month and had threatened to ban the country from...

Greece face international ban over violence, FIFA representative warns

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis stormed the pitch on Sunday, carrying a gun.

ATHENS -- Greece could be expelled from international football competitions because of widespread violence, a FIFA representative said on Wednesday.

Herbert Huebel said a series of incidents, culminating in a gun-toting club owner running onto the pitch to protest a disallowed goal, were "unacceptable."

"Greek football is going to an edge," Huebel said, adding that a potential Greek suspension from international football "is not, any more, impossible."

Huebel met government and league officials...

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis apologises for storming pitch with gun

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis stormed the pitch on Sunday's game with AEK Athens while carrying a gun.

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis has apologised for storming the pitch during Sunday's clash with AEK Athens while appearing to carry a gun in a hip holster.

The Greek Superleague contest descended into chaos when, with the score 0-0, PAOK had an 89th-minute goal ruled out for offside.

Savvidis marched onto the pitch accompanied by bodyguards in protest and had to be restrained as he vented his fury, with images seeming to show there was a firearm attached to a holster on his hip. Savvidis made...

Greek Super League suspended after armed PAOK owner's pitch invasion

PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis invaded the pitch with a gun in a holster around his waist.

Greece's sports minister says Greek Super League matches have been suspended indefinitely, a day after the gun-toting owner of PAOK marched onto the pitch following a disputed goal at the end of a league match.

Minister Giorgos Vasileiadis, speaking after meeting Monday with the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, said fixtures have been suspended and would not restart "if there is not a new, clear framework agreed to by all so we can move forward with conditions and regulations."

PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis...
