Brazil and Argentina look to regain Copa Libertadores stranglehold

Flamengo supporters
Flamengo supporters will turn out in numbers at the Maracana stadium against San Lorenzo.

Last year, Atletico Nacional broke the monopoly of the big two on South America's premier club prize.

By winning the Copa Libertadores, the continent's Champions League equivalent, the Colombian side ensured that the trophy did not go either to Argentina or to Brazil first time since 2008.

Indeed, the Libertadores has only eluded the big two twice in the last 12 years and, for a number of reasons, it is hard to see it going anywhere else in 2017.

First, the holders are going through an inevitable...

Barcelona extend option on Palmeiras defender Yerry Mina until 2018

Craig Burley delves into Barcelona's recent struggles and believes some of the players are going through a confidence crisis.

Barcelona have extended an option they have to sign Palmeiras centre-back Yerry Mina until after the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

Barca would otherwise have had to make a decision on whether they wanted to exercise their right to buy Mina for €9 million this summer.

However, talks between the two clubs in Barcelona this week have led to a new deal that allows the Blaugrana a preferential option on the Colombia international for a further year.

"Palmeiras president Mauricio Galiotte and executive...

Gabriel Jesus adapts at Manchester City with help of Brazilian teammates

Shaka Hislop analyses the significant role Vincent Kompany and Gabriel Jesus played in Man City's FA Cup win over Palace.
Despite Wayne Hennessey's best efforts, Man City head into the FA Cup 5th round with a 3-0 win over Palace.
Watch an exclusive interview from Manchester City's newest signing, Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel Jesus is adapting quickly to life at Manchester City -- thanks to a little help from his Brazilian teammates.

The 19-year-old striker made his first start for City on Saturday, since completing his £27m move from Palmeiras in the 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup.

Jesus said he has been made very welcome at the club since arriving at the start of the year with fellow Brazilians Fernandinho and Fernando taking special care of him and helping him to settle into life in England.

Palmeiras defender Yerry Mina excited by Barcelona interest

Craig Burley and Steve Nicol say the title race is back on in La Liga after Real Madrid's loss to Sevilla.
Yerry Mina Colombia
Yerry Mina has been linked with a move to Barcelona.

Colombia defender Yerry Mina has said it is exciting to be a Barcelona target but added that he intends to stay at Palmeiras for the time being.

Mina, 22, was part of the Palmeiras side that won the Brazilian title and has said he is happy to put a move to Europe on ice.

Barca are following his progress and have an option to sign him for €9 million which they are reportedly keen to take up.

"Everything is going really fast, but I'm happy with what's happening to me," Mina told Diario Sport.

Chapecoense survivors lift Copa trophy before draw in first game since crash

The three surviving players of the air crash two months ago that killed 19 members of Brazil's Chapecoense lifted the Copa Sudamericana trophy on Saturday in honour of their dead teammates.

The moving moment came just before the rebuilt side played its first match since the Nov. 28 tragedy, drawing 2-2 with defending Brazilian champions Palmeiras in a charity game.

The most emotional scene came when goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, who survived the crash but had part of his right leg amputated, lifted...
