Vitor Hugo signs for Fiorentina in switch from Palmeiras

Vitor Hugo (heading the ball) has arrived from from Palmeiras.

Fiorentina have replaced the departing Gonzalo Rodriguez by signing Brazilian defender Vitor Hugo from Palmeiras.

Vitor Hugo, 26, signed a four-year contract at the Stadio Artemio Franchi just over a week after Rodriguez made his last appearance in a 2-2 Serie A draw with Pescara.

Rodriguez is now a free agent after opting against extending his contract in Tuscany.

Vitor Hugo, whose arrival at Fiorentina was announced on the club's official website, won the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa...

Eight slots up for grabs before Copa Libertadores enters knockout play

Jonathan Gomez and Santa Fe must defeat The Strongest to advance in the Copa Libertadores.

Half of the places have been filled in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores. This final week of the group phase, then, is all about filling the other half.

Eight slots remain, and 14 teams are chasing them. In some cases, it is a straight shootout. In Group 5, for example, either Colombia's Santa Fe or The Strongest of Bolivia will join Santos of Brazil in the knockout phase. The two teams meet in Bogota on Tuesday. Santa Fe need to win. A draw is good enough for The Strongest. But the Bolivians...

Palmeiras call for CONMEBOL action after Copa Libertadores brawl

Palmeiras players face off with Penarol players after their Copa Libertadores match.

Palmeiras are hoping that CONMEBOL act swiftly and punish Uruguayan outfit Penarol following a brawl that marred their 3-2 come-from-behind triumph in Montevideo in the Copa Libertadores.

Brazil side Palmeiras trailed 2-0 at half-time but hit back for a 3-2 triumph on Wednesday that put them top of Group 5 with 10 points, while the hosts remained at the foot of the standings with just three points.

Instead of celebrating a victory after the final whistle, the Palmeiras players became engaged in...

Brazil and Argentina look to regain Copa Libertadores stranglehold

Flamengo supporters
Flamengo supporters will turn out in numbers at the Maracana stadium against San Lorenzo.

Last year, Atletico Nacional broke the monopoly of the big two on South America's premier club prize.

By winning the Copa Libertadores, the continent's Champions League equivalent, the Colombian side ensured that the trophy did not go either to Argentina or to Brazil first time since 2008.

Indeed, the Libertadores has only eluded the big two twice in the last 12 years and, for a number of reasons, it is hard to see it going anywhere else in 2017.

First, the holders are going through an inevitable...

Barcelona extend option on Palmeiras defender Yerry Mina until 2018

Craig Burley delves into Barcelona's recent struggles and believes some of the players are going through a confidence crisis.

Barcelona have extended an option they have to sign Palmeiras centre-back Yerry Mina until after the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

Barca would otherwise have had to make a decision on whether they wanted to exercise their right to buy Mina for €9 million this summer.

However, talks between the two clubs in Barcelona this week have led to a new deal that allows the Blaugrana a preferential option on the Colombia international for a further year.

"Palmeiras president Mauricio Galiotte and executive...
