Referee spells out Alex's name with vanishing spray

Some referees are clearly more artsy than others, and that was certainly the case in Alexsandro de Souza's testimonial match on Saturday.

Former Brazil captain Alex, now 37, pulled together some famous names from his career for the game at Palmeiras -- who he played for in three separate spells.

But the ref stole the limelight by spelling out his name in vanishing spray before he took a free kick.

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot certainly enjoyed it.

Brazil introduces plan to renegotiate club debts, force fiscal responsibility

Fans of the Brazilian domestic game have had little to celebrate given the clubs' poor management over the years.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's government wants to let football clubs renegotiate $1.2 billion in debts but in the process force them to start spending more wisely.

The measure signed by President Dilma Rousseff on Thursday gives Brazilian clubs up to 20 years to pay what they owe to the federal government. In exchange, they must manage their finances more professionally.

Congress still has to approve the measure.

In order to take advantage of the government's favorable conditions, clubs have to commit...

Palmeiras sack coach Dorival Jr. after escaping relegation

Palmeiras survived despite drawing in their final match of the season, when it looked like they could be relegated.

SAO PAULO -- Eight-time national champions Palmeiras have fired coach Dorival Jr. after narrowly escaping relegation in the Brazilian football league.

Palmeiras made the announcement on Monday, a day after they retained their place in the top flight thanks to Vitoria's 1-0 loss to Santos in the competition's final round.

Palmeiras were held to a 1-1 home draw by Atletico Paranaense, enough to finish two points ahead of Vitoria.

Dorival Jr., a former Palmeiras player, was hired in September to replace...

Police detain 6 people after fan death in Brazil

SAO PAULO -- Brazilian police have detained six people after a confrontation that left a 21-year-old football fan dead this weekend, marking the third death involving rival supporter groups in Sao Paulo this year.

Authorities said Monday that the six men will be interrogated to explain their participation in the fighting that took place on a major highway just hours before the Brazilian league game between Palmeiras and Santos on Sunday at the Pacaembu Stadium.

Four people remained hospitalized,...

Palmeiras' Jorge Valdivia given two-match suspension for stamping

Jorge Valdivia scores Chile's second goal during their World Cup match against Australia.

Sao Paulo -- Brazil's sports tribunal has given Chile playmaker Jorge Valdivia a two-match suspension for stepping on an opponent in a Brazilian league match.

The Palmeiras player was facing a 12-match suspension for stepping on Flamengo midfielder Amaral following a battle over the ball in a Sept. 17 match.

Valdivia will miss Palmeiras' home match against Chapecoense on Thursday. The midfielder had already missed one match following the red card against Flamengo.

Palmeiras' lawyers said the player's...
