Penarol vs. Nacional preseason friendly costs Pablo Bengoechea his job?

Bengoechea was popular, a former club legend and a successful manager. Did losing to a rival cot him his job?

Naturally the headlines regarding South American football have gone to this weekend's River Plate vs. Boca Juniors match in Argentina. How on earth could a high summer preseason friendly produce the level of animosity that leads to five red cards?

Then again, these big, traditional South American derbies can be a law unto themselves. Reason goes out the window, emotion takes over and gets out of hand -- this was even clearer, perhaps, across the water in Uruguay.

Nacional's U-14 goalkeeper scores incredible goal vs. rivals Penarol

It's safe to say there is little love lost between Uruguayan rivals Nacional and Penarol, even as you get down into their youth teams.

And so with a crucial U-14 cup game tied 1-1 in extra time, up stepped Nacional's goalkeeper, the awesomely named Guillermo Centurion. After safely diffusing the danger from a Penarol corner in which nearly every player was in his penalty area, he made a stunning play.

What a run! Nacional would win 3-1 and eliminate their nemesis.

Nacional teammate has Alvaro Recoba's face tattooed on arm

Nacional took all the spoils in the Uruguayan clasico against bitter rivals Penarol a weekend or two ago thanks in the main to a spectacular 30-yard freekick from their veteran playmaker Alvaro Recoba.

Having come on for the final 20 minutes, Recoba sealed a dramatic 2-1 win for Nacional in the fifth minute of injury time when the 38-year-old club legend curled in a trademark set-piece to snaffle the victory for his side with what transpired to be the last meaningful kick of the game.

Next game between historic rivals Nacional and Penarol has title weight

The chance for Nacional to win the title on Sunday adds extra spice to their fiery rivalry with Penarol.

Battle resumes on Sunday in the oldest derby outside the British Isles. Since June 1900 the big two clubs in Montevideo, Uruguay, Nacional and Penarol, have been fighting out a bitter rivalry.

At the start, though, Penarol went by another name: Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, which rather gives away the English origins of the institution. Soon, though, the identity of the club was transformed; as Penarol they attracted a following among poor Italian immigrants flooding into Uruguay, people...
