Copa Libertadores pits Brazil vs. Argentina in intriguing last-16 ties

Robinho and Atletico Mineiro are fancied to beat Racing but the Copa Lib is known for its unpredictability.

On Wednesday the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores really gets serious: three games, five former champions and two big clashes between clubs from Brazil and Argentina. It's perhaps surprising that all of this is coming so soon, in the round of 16 rather than in the quarterfinals. Come the end of next week, some major challengers will have left the competition.

The day kicks off with one of those Argentina-Brazil confrontations. In Buenos Aires, Racing play host to Atletico Mineiro, the 2013...

Uruguay legend Alvaro 'El Chino ' Recoba bids farewell to football

Alvaro Recoba's farewell match
Alvaro Recoba received a standing ovation at his farewell match at the Gran Parque Central stadium in Montevideo .

"One last magic act." That's how El Pais, Uruguay's biggest newspaper, chose to headline their preview of Alvaro Recoba's farewell match, which took place on Thursday night in the Gran Parque Central, a stadium he knew so well and lit up so frequently during his playing days with Nacional. Recoba debuted for Danubio back in 1994, but enjoyed his first successes -- and his most recent ones too -- with Nacional, where he became a club idol.

A move to Italy followed in 1997, and Recoba's Inter Milan...

Penarol vs. Nacional preseason friendly costs Pablo Bengoechea his job?

Bengoechea was popular, a former club legend and a successful manager. Did losing to a rival cot him his job?

Then again, these big, traditional South American derbies can be a law unto themselves. Reason goes out the window, emotion takes over and gets out of hand -- this was even clearer, perhaps, across the water in Uruguay.

The big Montevideo derby, even...

Nacional's U-14 goalkeeper scores incredible goal vs. rivals Penarol

It's safe to say there is little love lost between Uruguayan rivals Nacional and Penarol, even as you get down into their youth teams.

And so with a crucial U-14 cup game tied 1-1 in extra time, up stepped Nacional's goalkeeper, the awesomely named Guillermo Centurion. After safely diffusing the danger from a Penarol corner in which nearly every player was in his penalty area, he made a stunning play.

What a run! Nacional would win 3-1 and eliminate their nemesis.

Nacional teammate has Alvaro Recoba's face tattooed on arm

Nacional took all the spoils in the Uruguayan clasico against bitter rivals Penarol a weekend or two ago thanks in the main to a spectacular 30-yard freekick from their veteran playmaker Alvaro Recoba.

Having come on for the final 20 minutes, Recoba sealed a dramatic 2-1 win for Nacional in the fifth minute of injury time when the 38-year-old club legend curled in a trademark set-piece to snaffle the victory for his side with what transpired to be the last meaningful kick of the game.
