Motherwell manager Ian Baraclough believes Scott McDonald's hunger to keep the club in the top flight is the most encouraging aspect of their latest transfer deal.

McDonald returned to Fir Park on Thursday almost eight years after leaving for Celtic in a B£700,000 deal.

The 31-year-old, who last played for Millwall on January 10, has 12 games to make an impact and get the Scottish Premiership bottom club out of relegation danger.

Motherwell dropped to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership after a 1-0 defeat by Dundee in a dreary encounter at Fir Park.

Dees defender Paul McGinn scored a fortuitous goal after 12 minutes - an intended cross flew into the net - to ultimately give the Taysiders all three points.

Ross County's 3-1 win at Partick Thistle meant they leapfrogged Ian Baraclough's side, who are without a win in eight games, and St Mirren, who lost 3-0 at Aberdeen.

It was Dundee's third victory over Motherwell this season...

Ross County ended a seven-match losing run at home with a thrilling 3-2 victory over fellow Scottish Premiership basement battlers Motherwell at Global Energy Stadium.

County deservedly led at half-time through a superb Martin Woods strike, but Conor Grant levelled from a free-kick early in the second half.

The home side looked to have put the game beyond Well with goals from Paul Quinn and Raffaele De Vita, but the visitors made sure of a grandstand finish when Fraser Kerr pulled one back 11 minutes...

John Sutton prevented Motherwell suffering a sixth consecutive Scottish Premiership defeat as they bounced back from debutant Louis Laing's red card to draw 1-1 with St Johnstone.

A new era at Fir Park looked almost certain to get off to a losing start as Motherwell trailed to Murray Davidson's early goal.

With new owner Les Hutchison watching from the directors' box 24 hours after assuming control, another Motherwell newcomer got his Fir Park career off to the worst of starts.

Dundee United returned to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership with a 3-1 victory over struggling Motherwell at Tannadice.

A second-half brace from midfielder Charlie Telfer allied to defender Jaroslaw Fojut's header proved enough for Jackie McNamara's men, despite Simon Ramsden's goal on 79 minutes for Ian Baraclough's third-bottom side.

This was Well's fifth straight league defeat, during which they have conceded 17 goals, while United stayed fourth in the table.
