Major League Soccer is lining up mighty Real Madrid as its opponent for this summer's All-Star Game in Chicago, multiple sources have told ESPN FC.

The deal was not yet final as of last weekend, but an agreement is expected that would have the defending UEFA Champions League winner play a team of top MLS players on Aug. 2 at Soldier Field, the sources said.

Real Madrid would become the first Spanish club to participate in the event.

Arsenal to face MLS in 2016 All-Star Game as part of preseason tour

The 2016 MLS All-Star Game will feature Arsenal in San Jose, Calif., on July 28.

Major League Soccer has announced that Premier League side Arsenal will be the opponent for the 2016 MLS All-Star Game, to be held in San Jose, California, on July 28.

The game will be played at the San Jose Earthquakes' Avaya Stadium and telecast in the U.S. on ESPN and in the UK on Sky Sports.

After last year's game against Tottenham, the appearance of Arsenal marks the second consecutive year -- and ninth time in the past 12 years -- that the MLS All-Stars will face English opposition.

Selecting Major League Soccer's All-Star team on merit, not reputation

There's no doubt that the Major League Soccer All-Star Game is as much about selling the league with big names as about rewarding the best first-half performances with selections to the team. One needs not look further than commissioner Don Garber's picks -- Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard (the latter replaced by Dax McCarty due to injury) -- to understand that reality. When named to the All-Star team, neither had played a minute for his new MLS team.
