Melbourne Victory's Matthieu Delpierre retires from football

Matthieu Delpierre
Matthieu Delpierre was a key part of Melbourne Victory's 2014 Premiership and Championship winning sides.

Melbourne Victory has a giant hole to fill in the heart of its A-League defence with Matthieu Delpierre announcing his retirement from football.

The towering French defender is a tough loss for the A-League heavyweights after an instrumental role in the club's championship last season and another fine campaign this year.

He finished the A-League campaign with his future in the air after previously declaring his intention to retire only to withdraw that claim a month later.

Melbourne Victory still in ACL chase despite loss, Sydney FC through

Melbourne Victory's chances of joining Sydney FC in the knockout rounds of the AFC Champions League will come down to the wire.

A 3-1 loss to cashed-up Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG on Tuesday night makes their final match with Japan's Gamba Osaka on May 3 a do-or-die affair.

Kevin Muscat's side are yet to reach the last 16 of the Asian continental competition in four attempts.

Neither had Sydney FC until Tuesday night.

Ironically, good news for one of Victory's arch-rivals came through...

The A-League club has asked for an explanation about the process which saw Berisha's sanction following a red carding this month reduced.

The 30-year-old Albanian was penalised and later handed a two-game suspension for kicking out at Phoenix captain Andrew Durante while getting treatment during Victory's 4-1 win on April 2.

But FFA's disciplinary...

Melbourne Victory's Besart Berisha ready for A-League elimination final

Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha
Besart Berisha will return to lead Melbourne Victory's attack against Brisbane Roar on Friday.

There's a growing sense of optimism in Melbourne Victory ranks that they're making moves at the right time of the A-League season.

Positive results have returned, with Kevin Muscat's side on a six-match unbeaten streak in the A-League and Asian Champions League (ACL).

The return to fitness of Carl Valeri, and now defender Nick Ansell, adds to the momentum.

On Tuesday night, Victory received the icing on their cake when striker Besart Berisha was cleared by a FFA tribunal to play in Friday night's...
