Melbourne Victory beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 at Lang Park to move three points clear at the top of the A-League.

Melbourne Victory slumped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to strugglers Newcastle Jets on Friday to leave the race for this season's A-League title wide open.

Newcastle were bottom of the standings going into the AAMI Park encounter but secured a much-needed victory courtesy of Edson Montano's close-range finish on 54 minutes.

A-League: Perth Glory banned from finals for salary cap breaches

Perth Glory have been banned from the A-League finals.

Australian club Perth Glory have been found guilty of salary cap breaches and have been banned from competing in next month's A-League finals.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) said that the Western Australian side were A$400,000 over the A-League salary cap of $2.55 million.

Glory, who are second on the table with three regular season matches to go, will also be fined A$269,000 for infringements over the past three seasons.
