CAF: Sundowns dumped out of Champions League

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were dumped out of the CAF Champions League after losing 3-2 on penalties to Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Rades on Saturday.

The South Africans lost the match 1-0, which saw the aggregate score locked at 1-1, but three awful penalties from Percy Tau, Yannick Zakri and Bangaly Soumahoro in the shootout sealed their fate.

Salaheddine Saidi had given Wydad the lead in the match with a goal in the first half, and they were unlucky not to double their...

Sundowns ready for Wydad intimidation in Champions League tie

Mamelodi Sundowns will have their credentials as Africans champions severely tested when they travel to Wydad Casablanca for the second leg of their CAF Champions League quarterfinal on Saturday.

The fixture will be played at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat, some 85 kilometres up the coast from Wydad's traditional home, which is undergoing renovations. But that does not mean the atmosphere will be any less intimidating for Sundowns, who hold a slender 1-0 lead from the home leg after a...

Africa's top sides have all to play for after cagey CAF Champions League quarter finals

The CAF Champions League has reached the halfway stage of the quarter finals after an intriguing weekend of action across the continent, but any of the eight sides still standing in the competition will fancy their chances of reaching the final four.

Of the sides to progress from the extended group stage, only reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns secured a first-leg victory, but their defeated foe - Wydad Casablanca - will surely be confident of rescuing the tie in front of their own fans next weekend.

Troubled preparations affect Africa's giants ahead of CAF CL quarters

Al-Ahly clash with Tunisian giants Esperance in the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarter finals as they seek a tenth continental crown on Friday, with North African sides dominating the last eight, but they, like some of their rivals, have endured troubled preparations for the weekend's games.

Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, one of only two non-North African sides still standing in the competition, host Wydad Casablanca, while surprise package Al-Ahli Tripoli meet Etoile du Sahel,...

Big deals mark end of South African transfer window

The transfer window in South Africa's Premier Soccer League slammed shut with a bang on Thursday after a number of high-profile deals on deadline day.

One of these saw a star name depart the league as reigning PSL Player of the Season Lebogang Manyama joined Turkish side Konyaspor from Cape Town City for a fee believed to be €800 000. That transfer is subject to a medical, but that is unlikely to be an issue and will be conducted when Manyama has completed his national team duty with Bafana...
